Complex PTSD is a disorder that affects an adult’s ability to function normally. It is characterized by symptoms that are more inward-focused and less outward-focused. They can alter an adult’s self-confidence, behavior, and relationships. Symptoms may include a sense of separation from others and a lack of trust. They can also alter child development.

EMDR helps treat PTSD and mental illness

EMDR helps treat PTSD and other mental illnesses by utilizing an adaptive information processing model that engages both sides of the brain. The therapy is conducted by a therapist who guides the client through a series of standardized procedures.

During the initial assessment, the healthcare provider will ask the patient about his or her past and present upsetting memories. They will also gather information to identify if EMDR is a good treatment for the patient. The therapist will then explain the procedures and will provide the patient with tools to manage his or her emotions.

The therapist will discuss the history of the trauma and develop a treatment plan. During the session, the therapist may also lead the patient through an exercise known as the Safe/Calm Place. The therapist will cue the client with specific eye movements and sounds.

The therapist will use bilateral stimulation to help the client access painful memories. This can include tapping the fingertips on both sides of the face or listening to auditory tones directed to the ears. This method engages both sides of the brain and gives the client focus as they access painful memories.

The first set of BLS may focus on the past, the second on the future, and the third on the present. The therapist will select the specific target sequence based on the client’s response.

Peer support facilitator for OSISS

Currently, the Support for Operational Stress Injury (OSI) program is a partnership between the Department of National Defence and Veterans Affairs Canada. As a result, it’s offering a plethora of services for operational stress injury victims and their families.

The organization has 63 personnel in over 33 locations across Canada. It’s not hard to see why, considering its impressive size and scope. OSISS aims to help everyone affected by OSI by providing a range of services, from family support to critical incident stress management debriefings.

Using the OSISS model of recovery, users are accompanied by experienced counselors who are able to answer the questions that matter. While it’s no wonder that the organization’s most successful members are former military personnel, it’s no surprise that they aren’t the only ones benefiting from this support. In fact, the organization’s success has led to the creation of a thriving community of like-minded individuals. The program has also inspired a few notable movers and shakers within the Canadian mental health community.

Crystal Arber is a graduate of the University of British Columbia and a certified EMDR therapist. She’s been a member of the BC College of Social Workers and a volunteer with the military and First responders. In addition to her clinical expertise, she’s a devoted family member of a military veteran and has a vested interest in helping military families.
